The small island republic of Nankan is home to the Makari Academy, a school governed by the whims of its richest students from the royalty of neighbouring nations. Ceska, a genius polyglot and fanatical anthropologist, is asked to act as interpreter and chair for the squabbling members of this Council of Royals, particularly to prepare for the arrival of the first ever students from the Yaguu - those who cannot use magic, in a world where magical blessings called Lua are supposedly conveyed by the goddess Saryaa. When the Yaguu - and their enigmatic crown prince Shiki - arrive in Nankan, tensions run high; when a tense Council meeting somehow ends with the disappearance of Lua from the entire world and a mysterious homogenisation of language, Ceska decides to investigate what is going on - as no-one is quite who they seem to be on Nankan...
